
Quartz vs. Granite: the honest pick for a working kitchen
We install both. We make the same margin on both. So this is not going to end with a winner — it is going to end with a question about your kitchen that only you can answer.
The short version: granite takes heat and quartz takes abuse. Everything else is preference.
What they actually are
Granite is igneous rock. It was quarried in one piece, cut into slabs, and polished. Nothing about it was designed; the pattern is whatever happened underground a few hundred million years ago.
Quartz is engineered — roughly 90% ground quartz mineral bound in polymer resin and pressed into slabs in a factory. That resin is the whole story. It is why quartz is non-porous, why the pattern repeats predictably from slab to slab, and why it has one specific weakness.
Heat: granite, and it is not close
The resin binder in quartz starts to scorch or discolor somewhere around 300°F, and manufacturers exclude heat damage from their warranties — which tells you how confident they are about it. A pan straight off a burner, a slow cooker running for eight hours, an air fryer venting onto the slab: all of those are ways to permanently mark a quartz counter, and a scorch ring does not buff out.
Granite handles hot cookware. Repeated thermal shock can still stress a stone with natural fissures, so a trivet is still the smart habit — but it is a habit, not a warranty condition.
This is the single question we ask first. If your household will not reliably use trivets, we would rather sell you granite than take the quartz money and field the scorch-mark call in eighteen months.
Stains and sealing: quartz, comfortably
Quartz is non-porous. It never needs sealing, and a glass of red wine left overnight is a paper-towel event. In fact, sealing quartz is a mistake — the sealer cannot penetrate, so it sits on top, wears unevenly, and leaves the gloss streaky. If somebody offers you an annual quartz sealing service, decline it.
Granite is porous, and how porous depends on the stone. Dense dark granites can go years; light, open ones want resealing about once a year. The right schedule is not a calendar, it is the water-drop test: a few drops on the busiest area, wait fifteen to twenty minutes, and if the water still beads you are fine. If it soaks in and darkens the stone, reseal.
None of that is hard. It is one twenty-minute chore some years. But it is a chore quartz simply does not have, and for some households that is the whole decision.
Scratches, chips, and the things people worry about too much
Both sit high enough on the hardness scale to shrug off knives in normal use. Cut on a board anyway — you are protecting your knives more than the counter.
Chips are an edge and sink-cutout event on both materials, not a field event. A rounded profile chips less than a square one, which is one of the quieter arguments for a pencil or demi bullnose edge in a house with kids.
The one asymmetry: a chip in granite can often be filled with color-matched epoxy and disappear into the pattern, because the pattern is chaotic. A chip in a solid light quartz has nowhere to hide.
Seams and matching
Quartz is manufactured, so two slabs of the same color are nearly identical and a seam in a light solid is about as invisible as a seam gets. Granite is a natural material, so two slabs from the same block are cousins, not twins — the fabricator has to plan the seam where the pattern will forgive it. That is skill, and it is a fair thing to ask about before you sign.
If your kitchen is large enough to need two slabs, or you want the island and the perimeter to read as one surface, this matters more than any spec sheet.

Granite runs a little more here, which surprises people who remember granite as the budget option in 2005. Within quartz, the brand tiers are real but the performance across the major brands is structurally similar; the premium mostly buys pattern design and warranty length.

The two arguments nobody makes, that should decide some kitchens
Sunlight. Quartz is not UV-stable. In a sunroom, a three-season porch, an outdoor kitchen, or a bay window that gets six hours of direct afternoon sun, the resin can yellow and the change is permanent and uneven. Granite is UV-stable and does not care. If your counter runs under a south-facing window wall, that is not a preference question anymore.
Repairability. Both materials chip at edges and sink cutouts, which is where all the impact happens. A chip in granite can usually be filled with color-matched epoxy and vanish into the pattern. A chip in a plain light quartz is repairable but visible, because there is no pattern to hide the repair in. Households with heavy pans and hard floors should weigh that.
The decision, in three questions
- Will hot pans land on the counter, honestly, when everyone is tired? Yes → granite.
- Is any recurring maintenance a dealbreaker? Yes → quartz.
- Do you want a surface nobody else on your street has? Yes → granite, and go look at the actual slab.

I heard porcelain countertops chip easily. Is that true?
The surface itself is one of the hardest you can buy — around 7 on the Mohs scale, immune to knives, heat, acids, and UV. The chipping reputation comes from the slab format: porcelain counters are thin (often 6-12mm) and brittle, so a heavy pot dropped on an edge, an unsupported overhang, or rough fabrication can chip or crack it. On glazed slabs the pattern is only skin-deep, which makes chips conspicuous and hard to repair invisibly. The practical defenses are an experienced porcelain fabricator, proper substrate support, and full-body slabs where the color runs all the way through.
Is it OK to stand or sit on the countertop — say, to change a lightbulb?
Do not. Stone is enormously strong in compression but weak in tension, and a concentrated load in the wrong spot — over the thin rails beside a sink cutout, mid-span above a dishwasher, or on an unsupported overhang — is exactly how tops crack. That damage is excluded from both the manufacturer warranty and most workmanship warranties. The counter is rated for rolled-out dough and a full roasting pan, not a point load of adult weight. Keep a step stool in the pantry; it is far cheaper than a crack repair, which can rarely be made truly invisible.
Porcelain countertops sound indestructible — what is the catch?
Three catches. First, porcelain is brittle at edges and corners: a dropped cast-iron pan can chip it, and unlike solid surface or wood the chip cannot be sanded out invisibly. Second, the pattern on most slabs is only skin-deep, so fancy edge profiles and some repairs expose the plain body underneath. Third, fewer fabricators handle it well — installation skill matters more than with quartz, so vet the shop's porcelain track record before you sign.
Which countertop can my family actually not destroy?
Nothing is indestructible; every material has one weakness, so pick the one your household will not trigger. Quartz ignores stains and juice-box spills but scorches under hot pans (about 300F); granite takes hot pans but wants an occasional reseal and can chip at edges; quartzite is the toughest natural stone but still needs sealing; marble etches the first time someone leaves lemon or wine on it; butcher block hates standing water; laminate dies from water in the seams. For a busy family that will never baby a surface, mid-price quartz plus a hard trivet habit — or a medium-pattern granite that camouflages everything — is the realistic answer.
Which countertop material needs the least maintenance?
Quartz, porcelain/sintered stone, solid surface, and laminate never need sealing — routine care is dish soap and water. Granite and quartzite need periodic resealing (roughly yearly, more often for light porous stones), marble needs resealing every 6-12 months plus constant vigilance about acids, concrete needs sealing and waxing on a schedule, and butcher block is the most demanding: oiling monthly in year one, then a few times a year for life.
